Plymouth story - 25-11-2006
Last year I also had a chance to do my internship in England but I did not make use of it. A couple of weeks after my internship started I realized that I made a mistake for not going to England. This year I had a chance to make up for that mistake by going. I am going to England with 2 other students from my class and we are here to improve our English and learn a lot about the English culture.
Halloween party
On Tuesday night we had a student Halloween party organised by the training partnership. We had to walk about 20 minutes for the meeting point where we would be picked up by a bus. The bus brought us to a café called the spinning wheel. All of the students from the training partner ship were invited to come there. Most people were dressed up. I was wearing a mask as seen on the picture below.

Tom also had a mask and milad sprayed his hair white and was wearing lots of flashy lights. It was a good evening and the party ended around 12. After we were brought back by the bus, we went with a small group to the club mambo. There we stayed a while with some students and a member of the training partnership.
The company where I got my workplacement is called westcountry housing association

At westcountryHA I currently work on a project for a data survey. I am designing and creating a form that will be send out to the households. When the households complete and return the form it will get scanned. When it gets scanned the answers will be converted to a structured format (.csv file). Then a program will let a user see if the data has been captured correctly and if it is, it will save it into the database. That is a part of the program I am working on.
Some of the other things I do:
Some of the helpdesk when my colleague's are busy with other things.
Travelling sometimes with my colleague's to some of the smaller sites when they have problems
Learning programming in progress.
Dealing with spam.
Plymouth
On Thursday the 9th of November I had an afternoon off in Plymouth.
For my work placement we had to build up a work station in a new office in Plymouth, and my colleagues told me that it would only take a morning to do that and that I should use the afternoon to walk around and see more of Plymouth. They also gave me a list of things that would be worth while seeing there. Around 12.45 I got dropped of near the coast. It had a good view of the sea. I walked of the coast towards the aquarium past the Plymouth Hoe. When I reached the aquarium I decided that before I would go in, I would get something to eat first. It took me about 30 minutes to find a place to eat. (I skipped 2 places near the harbour because I thought it would have tourist prices but in the end after 30 minutes it cost me even more). Then I went back to the aquarium, I thought to be back quicker if it took a street earlier but I ended up lost in about 15 min I found my way back at the point where I got dropped off. I went straight to the aquarium since I already lost of time by walking around trying to find my way. At the aquarium there where 3 floors with things they were showing. I started on the 3 rd floor where they are showing the fish. I tried to make a lot of pictures but because of the reflection not all of them came out right.
There really were quite some nice fish. When I later on saw what was on the 4th and 5th floor I was disappointed. Except for educational things for the environment there was not much there. It took me a while to find the sharks there were only 2 very small sharks and 1 medium sized hiding behind lots of small fish.
It was a good day there but I think the aquarium was a bit small and I expected a tunnel with sharks and fish swimming above and around me. At the time I came out of the aquarium it was time for me to look for the train station. Because I did not know where it was and I had to guess where it would be. After a while I found the new shopping mall called "Drake Circus". It was also on the list I had of things I needed to see so I went inside it. It was a big shopping mall and it had multiple floors. I just took a quick look inside of it but because it was late I went to look for the train station again.
After a while of just walking in the way I thought it might be there I asked a lady if she could point me into the right direction. She told me that I was very close to the station and that I had to turn left at the next crossing and going straight ahead. After 3 blocks I would see the sign of the railway. It took me a while before I saw the sign, I was even doubting about if I heard it right or not. But in the end I made it back. I only had a small problem with the tickets, I went on the train expecting to buy the ticket from the conductor. I had to do that on all the other trips I made with the train but apparently that was only because of the ticket selling point was closed on the stations I used. So he said I was lucky and the conductor said that next time I had to buy a ticket if a selling point is open on the station or I could have a serious problem or something.
